Group A

Group A is the highest paid and topmost gazetted officer post in the Indian Railways and for this, students need to go through by UPSC selection procedure, which includes a written exam followed by an interview or group discussion. The exams conducted in Group A category are Civil Services Exam, Combined Engineering Services Exam and Combined Medical Service Examination. Group B

Group B is another gazetted officer category but lower than Group A. There are no such examination procedure and no direct recruitment for Group B officers. Employees are directly promoted from Group C to Group B, and the Railway Recruitment Board make appointments to the Group B officers. The post like Section Officers Grade, upgraded posts from Group C railway employees on the deputational basis.

Group C

Group C is a non-gazetted subordinate post and includes both technical and non-technical recruitment posts. It comprises the clerical staff, supervisors and skilled labour. The candidates recruited for this category posts by 19 RRB’s, across the different region of the country, and are basically controlled by the Railway Recruitment Control Board (RRCB). Here are the post comes under Group C category.

Technical Posts: Technical engineers in Signal, Telecommunication, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and others.

Non Technical Posts: Assistant Station Masters, Trains Clerks, Clerks, Ticket Collectors, Commercial Apprentice, Traffic Apprentice and others.

Group D

Group D is the lowest category posts, conducted by Railway Recruitment Cell at the divisional level. The posts include in this category are the Gunman, Safaiwala, Trackman, Peon, Tracker and others.
