Tungnath Temple is one of the famous Lord Shiva temples and also one of the Panch Kedar. Tungnath is famous for the highest temple in the world at the highest elevation and located in Rudraprayag district of Garhwal, Uttarakhand. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Tungnath temple is located in the Tungnath Mountain Range at an altitude of 3680 meters above sea level. According to Hindu mythology, Tungnath temple was built by Arjuna who was one of the Pandavas. The natural beauty of Tungnath is a center of attraction for tourists and this temple is considered to be more than 5000 years old. Thousands of tourists come here every year to see this grand temple.

In Tungnath temple, Lord Shiva is worshiped as “Panchkeedar”. The Tungnath temple is located almost in between the Badrinath and Kedarnath temples. This temple is in second place in the order of Panch Kedar. We know that Tungnath is one of the Panch Kedar of Mahadev( the God of Devas, Shiva), holds special significance compared to other Kedars because this place is also associated with Lord Rama, It is said that Ramachandra spent some moments of his life in solitude here. Lord Shiva’s hand is worshiped in Tungnath temple and the main entrance of the temple has a stone statue of Lord Nandi and the priest of this temple is a local Brahmin from Makkamath village. During the winter season, the temple is closed.

How to Reach Tungnath Temple

To come here first come to Rishikesh. If you want to visit Tungnath via flight, The nearest airport is Jolly Grant International Airport Dehradun. Flights to Dehradun are available from all major cities of India. jolly Grant to Chopta can be taken by taxi or bus. The nearest railway station from Chopta is Rishikesh, it is 209 km away from Chopta and trains from almost all cities come here. Direct trains run from Delhi, Dehradun, Kolkata, Mumbai. Taxis and buses are available from here to Ukhimath and Chopta. Chopta is only 410 kilometers away from Delhi and only 236 kilometers from Dehradun.
